Seth Rogen Blew Everyone’s Minds With His Crazy ‘Home Alone’ Discovery

Home Alone is a Christmas classic that’s been around for 28 years. Fans thought they already knew everything about Kevin McCallister and his valiant (and violent) defending of his home from the Wet Bandits. But they probably didn’t. Pineapple Express actor Seth Rogen found out something that totally changed his childhood memories of watching Home Alone and shared it with Twitter.
Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) uses an old gangster movie called Angels With Filthy Souls to scare off Marv (Daniel Stern) when he attempts to break into Kevin’s house. Like many people, Rogen thought that Angels With Filthy Souls was a real movie. It’s not a real movie. It was a fake movie created by the Home Alone filmmakers. Captain America himself was shocked to his core about this news.

The fake film is in one of Home Alone’s most iconic scenes. Kevin is washing the dishes when Marv tries the doorknob to see if it’s unlocked. Kevin plays Angels With Filthy Souls, which features a lot of threatening dialogue and a machine gun, to trick Marv into believing that the gangsters were real and in the house. To accentuate the gangster film’s gunfire, Kevin puts fireworks into a pot and sets them off. As Marv scrambles away, Kevin and the gangster from Angels With Filthy Souls utter the film’s most famous line: “Keep the change ya filthy animal.”
This discovery might have ruined some Christmases and unraveled the fabric of a few childhoods, but fans can find some comfort in this revelation. The fake Home Alone gangster movie is inspired by a real gangster film called Angels With Dirty Faces (1938), starring James Cagney. To make Angels With Filthy Souls as authentic-looking as possible, director Christopher Columbus shot it on film and went so far as to spend an entire day filming the scene on a soundstage located inside an abandoned gymnasium.
This fake movie was so loved that they made a sequel to the fake movie called Angels With Even Filthier Souls in Home Alone 2. True fans will want to dig out their old Home Alone DVD’s, since the full versions of both short films can be found in the featurettes section, along with commentary from director Chris Columbus.
