Avengers Directors Address Gamora’s Fate After ‘Endgame’

Her fate is one of the biggest question marks we have left after 'Endgame.'

Thanos pushing Gamora off of that cliff on Vormir is what allows him to gain the Soul Stone and dust half of the Avengers in Infinity War, so we assumed that she’d have to come back in Endgame in order for the Avengers to defeat Thanos. And that did happen, kind of.

Time travel brings us back to 2014, a time before Gamora had met Peter Quill in Guardians of the Galaxy. Nebula arrives in 2014 to get the Power Stone, and she presumably tells her adopted sister that she and Quill have a romantic future.

“This is the one? Seriously?” she says upon meeting him, which is certainly with what 2014 Gamora would’ve thought of Quill.

That’s the last time we see her. She’s back and then gone again in a flash, leaving plenty of questions about what happened to her. We know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in the pipeline, so presumably she’s coming back in that movie, we just don’t really know the mechanics of how that will happen.

And neither do the Russo brothers. The Endgame directors have no plans to direct another Marvel movie any time soon, and in an interview with Business Insider, they don’t seem to know or care what happened to Gamora because, hey, not their job.

BI: At the end, Peter Quill (Star-Lord) is looking at a computer screen for Gamora. I assume she didn’t get dusted? So obviously they’re looking for her. Can you answer just generally where she went? We didn’t see her leave.

Joe: We don’t know whether she was dusted or whether she survived. That’s probably a question that “Guardians [3]” will answer.

Anthony: Quill doesn’t know either.

Joe: I’m sure future films will answer that question.

Clark: That’s up to James Gunn, I guess.

On the one hand, it’s nice that the Russo brothers are getting out of the way, giving James Gunn more freedom to decide what happens in his film. On the other, it’s kind of bizarre that the guys who directed so much of the Marvel canon don’t seem to know what the hell happened to a pivotal character.

We and the Russos will have to wait until 2021, when the third installment of the Guardians series is released, to see what happened to Gamora.
