Grimes and Elon Musk’s Baby’s Name Changed For the Third Time
The birth certificate has emerged.
The Elon Musk and Grimes baby has been given a new name — for the third time.
Grimes and Musk had an infant baby boy in May. But what is the name? The couple, who initially named their son X Æ A-12 Musk, a highly symbolic name, ran into trouble with California naming law. In the state of California, only letters from the 26 letters of the English alphabet, and no characters or numbers, can be on a birth certificate, posing a real problem for the couple, who had a handful of non-legal characters in their baby’s name.
After the trouble, Grimes announced via Instagram that they had changed their son’s name to X Æ A-Xii, choosing to use Roman numerals in place of the numbers that couldn’t be on the birth certificate. Still, even that wasn’t legal, as now, the birth certificate for the baby has been revealed. The official name for baby Musk? X AE A-XII Musk, per TMZ. The “new” name — which is really just a legal version of the old one — will be X’s legal name.
The significance behind the name has been explained at length by both Musk and Grimes. According to Grimes, the significance behind X is that it’s the unknown variable. The Æ, or, on his birth certificate, AE, is Grimes’s special “elven” spelling of Artificial Intelligence, and A-12, or A-Xii, or X-II, is the couple’s favorite aircraft. “No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent,” she wrote on Twitter in May. The A signifies Archangel, Grimes’s favorite song.
The couple has also explained that the phonetic pronunciation of the baby’s name will be X Ash 12.
