"Our Great National Parks" Trailer Drops, Narrated by Barack Obama

by Devan McGuinness

Former President Barack Obama is stepping into the role of narrator. A new five-part series coming to Netflix, Our Great National Parks, is one of the first projects from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions company. The first trailer was just released and surprise, Barack is narrating.

“An epic five-part series narrated by President Barack Obama that invites viewers to celebrate and discover the power of our planet’s greatest national parks and wild spaces,” the documentary description reads.

“A fish that can walk. Surfing hippos that want to catch the waves. Species found nowhere else on earth,” Barack says in a voice-over on the trailer. “When humanity started to protect these wild places, we did not realize how important they would become: They’re a haven for endangered species and a hotbed for scientific research.”

The series was first announced last February and according to Deadline, the show features footage from Gunung Leuser National Park in the rainforests of Indonesia, Tsavo National Park in Kenya, Monterey Bay, California. At the time, it wasn’t revealed that Barack would be narrating, so it was a fun surprise once the trailer hit.

The documentary gives spectacular scenes from some of the greatest national parks around the globe while raising awareness for wildlife conservation as well. The series will be launched in tandem with an interactive and educational component through a joint campaign between the Wildlife Conservation Society and Count Us.

Our Great National Parks is the latest title in a multi-year agreement with Netflix the Obamas penned in 2018. They plan to create “a diverse mix of content, including the potential for scripted series, unscripted series, docu-series, documentaries, and features.”

Our Great National Parks debuts on Netflix April 13.
