It’s often said that becoming a parent changes you and Ryan Reynolds articulated that change perfectly back in 2015 after the birth of his daughter James. During an interview on The Late Show, the Deadpool actor dolled out some of his signature snark to lovingly throw some shade at his wife Blake Lively while explaining how fatherhood had changed him.
Reynolds said that he fell in love with his wife more than he had with anyone else in his life and before they had kids together, he could never imagine loving anyone nearly as much as he loved her.
“I used to say to her, ‘I would take a bullet for you,'” Reynolds told Letterman in the resurfaced viral TikTok that was just recently posted on Digg. “I could never love anything as much as I love you.”
It’s a very heartwarming sentiment but, unfortunately for Lively, it went right out the window the minute she gave birth to their daughter James.
“The second I looked in that baby’s eyes, I knew in that exact moment that if we were ever under attack, I would use my wife as a human shield to protect that baby,” Reynolds admitted.
Letterman seemed to be both impressed and horrified by Reynolds’ honesty, saying that he had “never heard love expressed quite like that.” Reynolds then went on to explain the inadequacies he feels he has as a dad, saying that men are “a diaper-changing facility hooked up to a life support system” while his wife is “a human Dennys” (though he clarified she’s “the most beautiful Dennys you’ve ever seen).
The clip ended up on TikTok, where it went extremely viral despite being over six years old. Thousands of commenters praised Reynolds for his intense love for his kid, with one person commenting that “if my husband doesn’t talk about my baby like this, I don’t want it.”
