Why Leonardo DiCaprio Made Everyone Stop Swearing On ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’

The new Quentin Tarintino movie — Once Upon a Time In Hollywood — has one scene-stealing moment and it’s got nothing to do with Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio. The best actor in the movie is without a doubt ten-year-old Julia Butters. In the movie, Butters plays a young actress starring in a western with DiCaprio’s washed-up actor character; Rick Dalton. Without ruining anything, let’s just say her scenes are the most heartwarming thing you can see in a movie that is also about the Manson family murders. But the real news is that apparently Leo and Julie Butters became such good buddies that the veteran actor actually told people on set to stop dropping f-bombs around the kid.

Speaking to Esquire, Butters said Leonardo DiCaprio was “protective” of her and specifically made people tone-down their language.

“When all the other guys were swearing, he would say, ‘Whoa, hey, whoa.’ And then he turned to my mom and I and he said, ‘I’m going to keep these guys in line.’ So he gave them a talking to about not swearing in front of the child.”

Butters also said she loved her scenes with the late-Luke Perry, who she described as being “fatherly,” and said she gave him a piece of pottery that Perry told her he would “cherish forever.”

All in all, despite some of its subject matter, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is an oddly upbeat movie and the scenes in which Julia Butter’s character motivates Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) to overcome his self-esteem issues will make even the hardest of hearts melt a little bit. And the real-life tenderness behind-the-scenes just makes it all the more likable. Leonardo DiCaprio is not a father in real life, but it seems like if he ever became one, he’d be great at it.
